How the NLL Playoff Format Works
Eight teams qualify for the NLL playoffs. Learn the seeding, single-game quarterfinals, best-of-three series and fixed-bracket path to the title.

The National Lacrosse League (NLL) playoff format has eight teams and three rounds: single-elimination quarterfinals, best-of-three semifinals and best-of-three Finals. A champion must win five playoff games. This is the format described for the 2026–27 season by FloLacrosse, the league’s streaming partner.
NLL here means the National Lacrosse League, not the NHL. The key distinction is the opening round: one loss immediately eliminates a team.
Who qualifies, and how are teams seeded?
The NLL uses one unified standings table, rather than separate Eastern and Western conferences. The top eight teams qualify and receive seeds No. 1 through No. 8. For 2026–27, that means eight of the league’s 12 teams reach the postseason, following an 18-game regular season. Source: FloLacrosse’s season-format guide.
The quarterfinal pairings are:
- No. 1 vs. No. 8
- No. 2 vs. No. 7
- No. 3 vs. No. 6
- No. 4 vs. No. 5
The higher seed hosts the quarterfinal, so finishing in the top four earns a home elimination game—not a first-round bye. The league confirmed these pairings and hosting rules in its 2026 playoff announcement.
How each playoff round works
| Round | Teams remaining at the start | Format | Wins needed to advance or win the title |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarterfinals | 8 | One elimination game per matchup | 1 |
| Semifinals | 4 | Two best-of-three series | 2 |
| NLL Finals | 2 | One best-of-three series | 2 |
These round lengths appear in the official NLL playoff bracket and the 2026–27 format guide.
“Best of three” means the first team to win two games wins the series. A 2–0 sweep ends it after two games; a 1–1 split requires a deciding Game 3. Scores are not added across games to determine the series winner.
Consequently, a title-winning team plays five to seven postseason games: one quarterfinal, two or three semifinal games, and two or three Finals games. Its five required victories are 1 + 2 + 2.
Does the NLL reseed after the quarterfinals?
No—the format uses a fixed bracket. The winner of 1–8 meets the winner of 4–5; the winner of 2–7 meets the winner of 3–6. The NLL explicitly stated in its 2024 playoff explanation that teams are not reseeded after each round, and its 2026 bracket follows those paths.
For example, if No. 8 upsets No. 1, it takes that bracket’s semifinal place against the 4–5 winner. It does not automatically face the highest remaining seed.
Why older explanations mention conferences
The NLL introduced unified standings for 2023–24, replacing its East/West conference structure. That change also established the league-wide 1–8 quarterfinal pairings. An older guide built around conference qualification therefore describes a different format. Source: the format-change announcement published by TSN.
